KZM 02b Offb 2-3 Gemeinden; Pergamon Thyatira und Sardes
In the last study NMD 02a Rev 2 Letters 1 and 2, we have read the first 2 letters Jesus Christ has written. In study NMD 02b Rev 2-3 L3 L4 L5 we will study from Revelation 2:12 until Rev 3:6. In that part we will study the letters to Pergamum, Thyatira and Sardis. Before we go into details concerning these three letters we will first mention a few significant details in relation to these 7 letters as a whole. When the 7th letter has been discussed we will give you a summary of all features for each letter.
To whom did Christ write?
We are studying the 7 letters from Jesus to the 7 churches published in Revelation. Just in case you have forgotten I will ask you again to whom and for what reasons those letters are?
1st They are intended for the churches to which they were sent (Ephesus, Smyrna, etc.) thus, during John’s lifetime.
2nd Secondly, they are meant for the whole Christian church, during John’s lifetime as well as thereafter.
3rd They appear to characterise the following periods of the church history.
4th Finally, they are directed to every believer who sees his or her own spiritual life reflected in the letters.
What are the differences of these letters?
Let us just look at the differences between the five letters in relation to the 7 letters. Just to get all the information in the available space I will use the following abbreviation: L stands for “Letter” and V stands for “verse”. In these five letters there are three differences. When we have studied the 7 letters you will see a significant shift in the wording and sequence of events which is already notable in letters 4 and 5.
The sequence of events in Letters 1, 2 and 3 are the following: first the Spirit followed by the promise. You can see that in Letter 1 verse 7, Letter 2 verse 11 and Letter 3 verse 17. In the letters 4 and 5 the order is: first the promise followed by the Spirit. You can see that in Letter 4 verse 26-29 and letter 5 verse 5 and 6.
An appeal for conversion of serious missteps in Letter 1 verse 5 and Letter 3 verse 13.
The church of letter 2 hears only words of approval as can be seen in verse 11. This is a very particular point as in each letter there is an individual note added by the phrasing of the following sentence: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches”. This individual note changes the composition as we have seen in letter 4 onwards.
